Statement of the President: Re RP economy

The strength of the Philippine economy goes beyond transient political events like the forthcoming May elections.

We have already laid the fundamentals of growth—a sturdy fiscal house, a solid program of good governance, a robust social payback to the people, mounting gains in the security front, and a democratic system in full bloom.

The business community is on the right track by placing their bets on this nation and government, the excellence of the Filipino and the spirit of enterprise that lives in our society.

As sure as the sun rises, we shall have clean and peaceful elections in May and there should be no doubt that the Filipino will make this happen.

We are a nation that cherishes democracy and freedom as deeply as we cherish enterprise and competition. Investors should go for the gold in the midst of the Philippine bull run.

PGMA to investors: Go for gold in wake of RP bull run

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo hailed the business community today for their confidence in the country and the economy, challenging investors to "go for the gold" in the midst of the Philippine bull run.

In her speech at the ongoing Tourism Negosyo Expo, the latest leg of the Go Negosyo series which opened yesterday at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City, the President reiterated that the strength of the country’s economy goes beyond transient political events like the forthcoming May elections.

"The business community is on the right track by placing their bets on this nation and government, the excellence of the Filipino and the spirit of enterprise that lives in our society," she said.

The President said her administration has already laid the fundamentals of growth like a sturdy fiscal house, a solid program of good governance, a robust social payback to the people, mounting gains in the security front, and a democratic system in full bloom.

The government, she assured, is likewise determined to keep the coming midterm polls clean and peaceful.

"As sure as the sun rises, we shall have clean and peaceful elections in May and there should be no doubt that the Filipino will make this happen," she assured, noting that the Philippines is a nation that cherishes democracy and freedom as deeply as it cherishes enterprise and competition.

Tourism Negosyo was organized by the Department of Tourism (DOT) to encourage Filipinos not only to spend their money on rest and recreational activities but most importantly to earn from it through micro, small and medium entrepreneurship.

Moreover, Camarines Sur Governor Luis Raymund Villafuerte said tourism is key to achieving economic takeoff because it has’ real and tangible benefits’ that directly impact on people’s lives.

Presidential Consultant for Entrepreneurship and Go Negosyo lead advocate Joey Concepcion also said the Go Negosyo Expo is the showcase of tourism-related business opportunities in the countryside as well as schools and training institutions.

"What makes Tourism Negosyo different from other expos is that instead of just encouraging people to spend their money on rest and recreational activities, we encourage them to earn from it as well," he explained.

Also present in the expo were Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, Presidential Management Staff (PMS) director general Secretary Cerge Remonde, Tourism Undersecretary Oscar Palabyab and Tourism Negosyo co-chair Vivienne Tan.

Statement of Secretary Ignacio R. Bunye

We appreciate the civic-minded move of the country’s leading business groups to sponsor and host the debate between Team Unity and the opposition.

We support all efforts to gather the nation around an enlightened, sober and informative discussion of the issues in the campaign.

Let both camps prepare their arguments in a way that will clearly reflect their respective platforms and programs of implementation.

Let this debate serve as an opportunity for the people across all sectors to scrutinize the political, social and economic creed of each candidate and show that he or she is prepared to put this on the line.

We are in the era of performance politics, no longer in the song and dance stage. The people demand an accounting of statesmanship, service and nation-building. Let the political noise abate and reasoned debate commence.

From the Mall of Asia, the President motored to Teoville Subdivision in Sucat, Paranaque and led the ceremonial water commissioning of Patubig para sa SUBPRES (Subdivisions along President’s Avenue and Adjacent Areas).

With the water interconnection of Maynilad Water Services Inc. to SUBPRES, a total of 2,750 households in nine subdivisions are now enjoying water supply, including 201 commercial establishments along President Avenue and Dr. Santos Avenue.

The SUBPRES area remained waterless for almost 22 years due to the inadequate water volume being supplied to the South, especially in Paranaque City.

The SUBPRES project is part of the ongoing "Patubig sa Barangay Project" of the President.
