Statement of the President: Re Global warming

The Philippines views with deep concern the UN report on global warming and part of our long term development agenda is the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. This is incorporated in various programs that mandate environmental protection, conservation of energy, the use of clean energy and alternative fuels, waste recycling and most of all, the education of our people at all levels.

The Cabinet will constantly keep an eye of the caveats of the UN on global warming in all our development programs and we shall march with the world in the struggle against global warming. The Philippines itself is becoming victim to destructive storms and floods as well as sharp changes in climate—taking heavy toll on lives, crops and property. We must act in concert now. I call on all Filipinos to be aware of this challenge and join hands in meeting it.

Statement of Secretary Ignacio R. Bunye: Re Jailbreak

The PNP and the AFP are intensifying the manhunt for the jail raiders and escapees in Kidapawan. The authorities are also trying to determine if MILF members were involved and, if so, to employ all means within the GRP-MILF ceasefire agreement to bring to justice those who may have been involved. The Department of Interior and Local Government, meanwhile, is taking a second look at the existing security measures on all jails throughout the country, especially those in which terror suspects are detained, to prevent the recurrence of similar jailbreaks.

PGMA says RP concerned over UN report on global warming

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said today the country views with deep concern the United Nations report on global warming and called on all Filipinos to be aware of the challenge and meet it.

"The Cabinet will constantly keep an eye on the caveats of the UN on global warming in all our development programs and we shall march with the world in the struggle against global warming," she said in a statement.

President Arroyo’s pronouncements came on the heels of a UN report warning that global warming would be unstoppable in the years to come.

The report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said warming over the past century was "very likely"-a certitude of 90 percent – caused by human activity.

The exhaustive study by 2,500 scientists from more than 100 countries sounds alarms about the impact of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere, and is designed to help policy makers.

The report said no matter how civilization slows or reduces its greenhouse gas emissions, global warming and sea level rise would continue on for centuries.

President Arroyo pointed out that part of the government’s long term agenda to lessen the impact of the phenomenon is the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

She said this is incorporated in various programs that mandate environmental protection, conservation of energy, the use of clean energy and alternative fuels, waste recycling and the education of people at all levels.

The Philippines itself, according to the Chief Executive, is becoming victim to destructive storms and floods as well as sharp changes in climate – taking heavy toll on lives, crops and property.

"We must act in concert now," she said. "I call on all Filipinos to be aware of this challenge and join hands in meeting it."

Manhunt for jail raiders, escapees intensified -- Bunye

The manhunt for the jail raiders and escapees in the Kidapawan jailbreak is now being intensified by the police and the military, according to Press Secretary Ignacio R. Bunye.

In a statement, Bunye said the authorities are also trying to determine if members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) were involved.

"If they were, we will employ all means within the GRP-MILF ceasefire agreement to bring to justice those who may have been involved," he pointed out.

Suspected Muslim guerillas attacked North Cotabato’s provincial jail in Kidapawan early Friday and freed three suspected bombers and dozens of other inmates.

At least 25 men with grenade launchers and M203 rifles destroyed the padlocks of six cells after they blasted their way into the provincial jail, allowing 48 inmates to escape.

Reports said jail guards were quickly overwhelmed by the attackers who used a grenade launcher to punch a hole in the wall and gain entry into the building.

The three high-profile inmates were identified as Datu Ali Sultan, Kair Mundos and Tukan Guindos, all facing charges on the bombing of the Kidapawan public market in 2003.

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), according to Bunye is now taking a second look at the existing security measures on all jails throughout the country to prevent the recurrence of similar jailbreaks.
