JURISDICTION OF THE SUPREME COURT
The jurisdiction of the Supreme Court consist of:
A. Original Jurisdiction - Petitions for issuance of writs of certiorari, prohibition and mandamus against the following:
1) Court of Appeals
2) Civil Service Commission
3) Commission on Elections
4) Commission on Audit
5) Sandiganbayan
6) Employees Compensation Commission
7) Central Board of Assessment Appeals
8) National Labor Relations Commission
B. Appellate Jurisdiction - which may either be Ordinary Appeal or Appeal by Certiorari
1) Ordinary Appeal - (also known as Writ of Error). There is no civil action appealable by ordinary appeal to the Supreme Court. Only in criminal cases.
2) Appeal By Certiorari - Certiorari refers to the cases under pars. a, b, c, and e of Section 5(2), Art. VIII of the 1987 Constitution and Sec. 17, RA 296. The appeal is discretionary to the SC and limited only on questions of law. If questions of fact or mixed questions of fact and law are involved, the aggrieved party shall appeal to the Court of Appeals and the decision of the CA may be appealed to the SC by certiorari uonly on question of law, which is a matter of discretion of the SC. Cases upon which appeal by certiorari to the SC lies are:
a) Appeal from judgment or final order or resolution of the Court of Appeals
b) Appeal from a judgment or final order or resolution of the Sandiganbayan
c) Appeal from a judgment or final order or resolution of the Regional Trial Court or other courts whenever authorized by law.
