Bunye says suspension of Senate inquiry on Oakwood rebellion good for all

Malacaņang today said the request of six senators to suspend the Senate inquiry on the Oakwood mutiny would definitely help an independent fact-finding commission get into the root of the incident.

Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye said the suspension of the inquiry would also give authorities enough time to do their job of going after those behind the mutiny.

In a radio interview, Bunye said the Palace concurred with last Friday’s call of Senators Francis Pangilinan, Noli de Castro, Manuel Villar, Jr., Joker Arroyo, Ralph Rector and Robert Barbers.

The six sought a suspension of the inquiry "until the plotters are tracked down and arrested and corresponding charges are filed against them."

The senators said an inquiry "may impede government efforts to address the rebellion" and asked the Senate leadership to "give our law enforcement authorities a free hand in conducting their own investigation."

Bunye said it was clear in the senators’ resolution that the inquiry could be conducted "at a later time."

"Makabubuti ‘yan, makakatulong para sa lahat (It would be good and would be of great help for everyone)," he said.

Earlier, fact-finding commission member Dr. Carolina Hernandez said the group would not let itself be influenced by any legislative inquiry on the Oakwood mutiny.

Hernandez also asked members of Congress to refrain from making any "political statements" as "it is not going to be constructive."

She lauded the six senators for seeking the suspension of the Senate inquiry because they support the work of the fact-finding commission.

She also upheld the integrity of the commission and the people composing it.
