President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Palm Sunday/Holy Week Message

GMA urges private sector to observe Holy Wednesday

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has encouraged the private sector not to require their employees to report for work on Holy Wednesday (April 16), in observance of the Lenten Season.

But the President, in issuing Proclamation No. 354, said private companies engaged in banking, financial, health, security and other vital services should continue serving the public.

She said "employers who opt not to require their employees to report for work are urged to make the necessary arrangements, which may include increasing work hours or allowing work on other days, to ensure that daily paid workers are paid the equivalent of their wages or compensation that they would have earned on the said date."

Production schedules should also be met "to maintain a continuous supply of goods and services" and that "all existing labor laws shall be observed," she added.

The President likewise asked officials of the executive department and those of the legislative and judicial branches of government to allow their employees not to report for work on April 16.

However, employees carrying out vital public services should report for work on Holy Wednesday.

In the same proclamation, she also declared April 19 (Black Saturday) a special non-working day nationwide.

Black Saturday falls between regular holidays Maundy Thursday and Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

She said "our people must be given the full and uninterrupted opportunity to ponder on the significance of the Holy Week and to properly observe its traditions with religious fervor, without prejudice to public interest."
